The Leaf series is an ongoing photographic experiment with scale. Each image depicts a magnified area that can be seen with the naked eye. But the area depicted—several square centimetres—is still small enough that it seldom enters our consciousness.
Depictions of ‘fall colours’ are typically portrayed on the same scale at which we see things when going for a walk: a bunch of leaves, a tree, or a forest. These photographs, on the other hand, lie just outside the edge of what we would normally perceive, and therefore reveal detail, colour and shape that would otherwise go unnoticed.
